Islamic New Year 2025: Key Facts
The Message and Meaning Behind the Islamic New Year
The spirit of the Hijri New Year can be understood by tracing its roots. It begins from 622 CE when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) along with his companions left his beloved home Makkah and migrated to Madina due to oppression and tyranny. It was a heartbreaking farewell that led to a hopeful beginning with the establishment of the first Islamic state.
Named after this Hijrah (migration), Hijri new year gives us a beautiful message of light after the darkest of days. So, let the new year be a reminder that even if the past year was challenging, with patience (sabr) and trust in Allah (tawakkul), you can be certain that the time ahead will be full of happiness, comfort and peace.
What is Muharram and Why Is It Sacred?
It is the first month of the Hijri New Year and is also one of the four sacred and divine months, associated with significant events in Islamic history. Allah discourages conflicts and fighting in this peaceful month. It is also the time of immense sadness as we remember the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) who was the most beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
This tragedy took place on the 10th day of Muharram (also known as Day of Ashura) and is observed by Shia Muslims with mourning gatherings (majlis), processions (juloos) and charity (niyaz and sabeel). Sunni Muslims participate by fasting, offering extra prayers, giving charity and remembering the bravery of Imam Hussain (AS).
Is the Islamic New Year Celebrated the Same as the Other New Years?
No, it is not celebrated in the same way as other New Years. For Muslims, the Islamic New Year 2025 will be a sacred time more about remembering than celebrating. They asses their inner state, seek forgiveness from Allah for previous sins and pray for a better tomorrow. They also remember the valuable lessons from the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which teaches them to let go of all that has passed and embrace the future with hope, patience and faith.
How to Spiritually Observe the Islamic New Year 2025
