Healing Emotional Wounds Through the Power of Breath

Introduction

In the long and tiring run of life, we all experience some level of emotional pain. Some wounds fade away with time. But deeper traumatic emotions, if left unresolved can get stuck in the body. It then shows up as anxiety, fatigue, anger, panic and even physical pain. While talk therapy works, some of us struggle to express our pain. That’s why many turn to the power of deep breathing. You can release trauma through breathwork in a gentle and non-verbal way. It soothes your overthinking mind, helping connect to hidden traumatic emotions to release the stuck energy from your body.

How Trauma Affects Your Mind and Body

Your trauma can be caused by something major (Big T) PTSD from war or surviving a crime or from painful life events like losing a loved one, dealing with career setbacks, a rough heartbreak. One gentle way to start healing is to release trauma through breathwork. But, before you begin, you must recognize the signs of unresolved trauma, which often show up as:

  • Anxiety that comes out of nowhere
  • Stress that never leaves the body
  • Operating in survival mode; always scared and alert
  • Feeling disconnected from your own body and surroundings
  • Flashbacks, guilt or emotional numbness

Healing Trauma with Breathwork

Free Yourself from Heavy Emotions

When you release trauma through breathwork, your mind goes into a deeply relaxed state where the critical thinking mind goes quiet, allowing the buried subconscious emotions to come up.

As trauma resurfaces, you may feel overwhelmed or have a sudden need to cry. This is why practitioners often pair conscious breathing with meditation or affirmation to help you process and release all the painful memories and feelings that come up. Trauma-informed breathwork offers a cathartic emotional release, which results in you feeling  lighter and freer.

Let Go of Stuck Trauma Energy from Your Body

When we experience trauma, our nervous system senses danger and goes into fight or flight mode in order to keep us protected. But, if it is left unprocessed, your mind freezes and gets stuck in a survival mode.

Trauma-informed breathwork sends signals of safety to your nervous system. Each breath moves the stuck trauma through your body, releasing it eventually. It is a comforting hug to parts of your mind, body and soul that have forgotten what safety feels like

5 Most Effective Types of Breathwork

Holotropic Breathing: You lie down, close your eyes and take quick yet deep breaths while gentle music plays in the background as you feel yourself slip into deep relaxation. Here, you are able to explore your inner world to find and let go of hidden trauma, emotional blockages and even subconscious patterns.

Alternate Nostril Breathing:  Balance begins with your breath, one side at a time. With the help of your thumb and ring finger, breathe through one nostril at a time. Keep repeating this pattern and feel relaxed as your nervous system calms down. This soothes your anxiety and panic, helping you feel more grounded to reality.

Transformational Holistic Breathwork: With guided circular breaths, positive affirmations and healing sounds, you shift out of your overthinking mind and return to the calm, grounded truth of the present moment.

Deep Belly Breathing: Take a deep breath and let it fill your belly. Place a hand and feel the sensation of your belly rising. Hold the healing breath and let it soak up all the traumatic emotions hiding deep within your gut. As you exhale through the mouth, visualize the pain leaving your body.

Box Breathing: Calm the spiralling thoughts and inhale for four seconds, now hold for four seconds and exhale for equal time. You can use the power of your imagination and imagine light entering your body as you inhale and let it absorb and remove all the darkness as you exhale.
