What to Expect from Breathwork?
You can expect a deeply calming and restorative experience during which a practitioner will guide you through various techniques of controlled breathing to release tension from the body, stress and negative feelings. After which you will feel lighter and relaxed.
What to Know Before You Arrive
Preparing for a conscious breathing session is very simple. Just have a light meal before you arrive, wear something loose and comfortable, so it doesn’t restrict you from taking deep breaths or laying down. And above all, bring an open and relaxed mindset.
Once you arrive, you will begin with a detailed discussion with your practitioner who will guide you on the whole process including the breathwork session duration which can be anywhere from a quick 30 minutes reset to a 60+ transformative experience. You can discuss your goals, set your intention or share any health concerns.
What Happens During Breathwork?
During the actual session, you will be welcomed into a calm, quiet and welcoming space with comfortable mats for you to sit on. The practitioner will begin guiding you on the breathing patterns they want you to follow. Meditation or visualization may also be incorporated to help you relax even more.
There are many different types of breathwork techniques that you may be guided through such as:
- Box Breathing: You inhale, hold and exhale continuingly for equal minutes, creating a soothing rhythm that helps you slow down and focus.
- Alternate Nostril Breathing: You breathe alternatively from one nostril then the other by closing one for a few minutes to disconnect from the noise of the world and relax.
- 4-7-8 Breathing: Breathe in through the nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 then a long exhale through the mouth to let go of all the tension your mind and body might be holding onto.
Once the exercises are completed, you will be guided to returning back to your normal breathing. People use this time to reflect on what they felt during the experience and then share it in a brief discussion.
What You Will Feel During the Experience
During Home of Wellness’s breathwork sessions in Dubai, clients often describe feeling the following:
Physical Sensations: Many describe feeling sudden warmth or tingling. They can also feel different parts of their body like shoulders and jaw physically relax as though they have just let go of tension they didn’t even realize they were carrying.
Emotional Responses: Conscious breathing exercises can bring up buried feelings to the surface. You may feel overwhelmed or like a wave of emotions has just hit you which is eventually released when you exhale, helping you feel light.
Mental Experience: People often say that they walk in with a busy mind and walk out feeling at peace with their thoughts as the experience helps quieten the mind’s chatter which improves clarity and focus.
What to Expect after a Breathwork Session?
According to our experts, your breathwork effectiveness timeline will be unique based on factors like your physical and emotional state along with how regularly you practice. But for most people they experience instant relaxation after the very first session and begin to notice its benefits in their daily life after 4-5 consistent sessions.
For greater benefit, we encourage you to not only be consistent but also include a 3-5 minutes exercise into your everyday routine or whenever you feel stressed, overwhelmed or anxious like before a meeting or an exam.
If you think a few minutes won’t make a difference, a study from Stanford Medicine has proved that just 5 minutes of daily conscious breathing can instantly lower your physical anxiety making it a quick and proven way to destress and clear your mind right when you need it the most.
